Ireland’s Mark English Creates History with Diamond League Victory in Shanghai

Mark English produced a sensational late sprint to win the men’s 800m at the Diamond League event in Shanghai, China.

The 33-year-old Irish athlete stormed past several competitors in the final metres to secure victory in a meeting record time of 1 minute 43.85 seconds. Botswana’s Kethobogile Haingura finished second, while American runner Brandon Miller came third.

The victory marked English’s first-ever Diamond League title and made him the first Irish male athlete to win an event in the prestigious series.

Speaking after the race, English said he was delighted to defeat such a strong field and credited his finishing speed for the memorable win.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Amy Hunt finished fifth in the women’s 200m with a season-best time of 22.48 seconds. Jamaican sprint star Shericka Jackson won the race.

In the men’s pole vault, Swedish world record holder Armand Duplantis claimed victory with a meeting record clearance of 6.12m, although he narrowly missed breaking his own world record.
