Idukki, July 16: The water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam has dropped significantly this July, raising concerns in both Kerala and neighbouring Tamil Nadu over its impact on agriculture, drinking water supply, and tourism.

According to the latest data, the dam’s water level stood at 112.9 feet on Wednesday, compared to 131.4 feet on the same day last year, marking a sharp decline of 18.5 feet.

The reduced storage has already begun affecting farming activities in the bordering districts of Tamil Nadu, which depend on water released from the dam for irrigation. Authorities have also warned that if the water level continues to fall, it could impact drinking water distribution in Kerala’s Kumily and Chakkupallom panchayats.

The declining water level has also raised concerns about tourism at the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Thekkady, where boating is one of the major attractions.

However, PTR Assistant Field Director R. Lakshmi said that boating and other tourism activities at Thekkady are currently operating without disruption.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation as both Kerala and Tamil Nadu remain dependent on the Mullaperiyar Dam for water resources during the dry season.
