Tehran / Washington: Fresh controversy has emerged over alleged efforts by United States and Israel to weaken Iran’s ruling establishment after reports claimed that Israeli officials considered bringing former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad back into political prominence.

According to international media reports, Ahmadinejad was allegedly viewed by some as a possible alternative figure capable of challenging Iran’s current leadership. The former president, known for his controversial anti-Israel statements during his tenure from 2005 to 2013, later repositioned himself as a critic of Iran’s ruling establishment after reportedly falling out with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The reports further claimed that Israel targeted a security building near Ahmadinejad’s residence in Tehran in an attempt to assist him in escaping what was described as house arrest. However, it was also suggested that Ahmadinejad later became uncomfortable with the alleged operation.

The claims, reportedly published by The New York Times, have triggered strong reactions internationally, with many analysts and observers dismissing the story as either implausible or possible disinformation circulated by political supporters or intelligence-linked sources.

Political experts say the reports highlight broader questions regarding Western and Israeli assumptions about public opposition to the Iranian government and their ability to influence political change through military pressure or strategic operations.

The developments come amid continuing tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, Israel, and the United States over regional security, nuclear concerns, and geopolitical influence.

DPCI International Desk reports that the controversial claims surrounding Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have intensified debates over foreign involvement in Iranian politics, while analysts continue to question the effectiveness of regime-change strategies through military and intelligence operations.
