Health authorities and global disease experts are closely monitoring a growing outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the virus continues to spread in conflict-affected regions where medical response efforts face major challenges.

According to health officials, the outbreak remained undetected for several weeks, allowing the virus to spread within communities before emergency measures could be fully implemented. The situation has become increasingly serious, with nearly 250 suspected cases and around 80 reported deaths so far.

Medical experts say the current outbreak is especially concerning because it involves a rare species of the Ebola virus, limiting the availability of proven vaccines, treatments, and response tools. Ebola is known to be one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, with fatality rates often reaching nearly one-third of infected patients.

The crisis has revived memories of the devastating 2014–2016 West African Ebola epidemic, the largest outbreak in history, during which more than 28,000 people were infected across several countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern, emphasizing the need for stronger global coordination and emergency support. However, experts clarified that the current outbreak does not indicate the beginning of a Covid-style global pandemic.

Dr. Amanda Rojek of the Pandemic Sciences Institute at the University of Oxford stated that the declaration reflects the complexity of the situation and the urgent need for international cooperation to contain the virus.

Neighbouring countries including Uganda, South Sudan, and Rwanda are considered at higher risk because of close travel, migration, and trade connections with affected regions in Congo.

Public health agencies are now increasing border surveillance, contact tracing, and emergency preparedness measures to prevent further cross-border transmission. International humanitarian organizations have also called for urgent funding and support to strengthen healthcare systems and protect frontline medical workers operating in conflict zones.

Health experts continue to stress that while the global risk remains low, rapid containment efforts are essential to prevent the outbreak from escalating further.
