At least 19 people have been confirmed dead and more than 134 injured after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines on Monday morning, according to local authorities.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 7:37 AM local time, triggering tsunami warnings across several countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia. While some tsunami alerts were later cancelled, authorities continue to monitor coastal areas for any potential threats.

The devastating quake caused significant destruction across several provinces, including South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City. Numerous buildings suffered severe damage, with dramatic footage circulating online showing the collapse of a Jollibee restaurant shortly after the tremor struck.

Emergency response teams have been deployed across affected regions to search for survivors, provide medical assistance, and assess infrastructure damage. Officials stated that the reported casualty and injury figures are preliminary and may rise as rescue operations continue.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assured citizens that the national government is fully engaged in disaster response efforts.

ā€œThe national government is moving, and we will not leave Mindanao behind,ā€ President Marcos said in an official statement.

The earthquake coincided with the opening day of the new school year in the Philippines. As a precautionary measure, President Marcos ordered the suspension of classes in affected areas.

Videos shared on social media showed frightened students taking cover in school grounds as buildings shook violently. In one incident in Davao Occidental Province, a temporary shelter structure reportedly collapsed behind a group of students, though school officials confirmed that no injuries were recorded.

Seismological agencies reported more than 130 aftershocks following the main earthquake, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 6.7. Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions issued by local disaster management agencies.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is expected to release a comprehensive assessment of casualties, injuries, and property damage in the coming days.
