Guwahati: Political tensions intensified ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly Elections after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma targeted 27-year-old candidate Kunki Chowdhury, one of the youngest contestants in the election race.

Chowdhury, contesting from the Guwahati Central constituency as a candidate of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), an ally of the Congress, became the centre of controversy after Sarma made remarks regarding her family during a campaign event in Dibrugarh.

The Chief Minister alleged that Chowdhury’s mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, had shared social media posts related to beef consumption and also criticised her for allegedly supporting activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.

The remarks have sparked political debate and intensified the ongoing election campaign atmosphere in the state.

DPCI Political Desk reports that the incident has added further heat to the Assam election campaign, with political parties increasingly engaging in personal and ideological attacks ahead of polling.
