In a major step towards preserving Goa’s natural beauty, a large-scale coastal clean-up drive was launched across several beaches in South Goa this week. The initiative, supported by local authorities and environmental groups, saw participation from hundreds of volunteers, including students, NGOs, and local residents.
The drive covered popular beaches such as Colva, Benaulim, and Varca, where volunteers worked together to remove plastic waste, glass bottles, and other debris washed ashore. Organizers stated that the campaign aims not only to clean the beaches but also to raise awareness about sustainable tourism and responsible waste disposal.
Officials emphasized that with tourist footfall increasing, maintaining cleanliness is becoming more challenging. “Goa’s beaches are one of our biggest assets. Protecting them is a shared responsibility,” said a spokesperson from the local municipal body.
Participants were provided with gloves, bags, and safety gear, ensuring a safe and organized clean-up process. Many volunteers also highlighted the importance of regular drives and stricter enforcement of anti-littering rules.
Environmental groups have called for similar initiatives to be conducted regularly, especially during peak tourist seasons. Plans are already underway to expand the campaign to North Goa beaches in the coming weeks.
