Guruvayur: The Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple witnessed an unprecedented rush of wedding ceremonies on Sunday, as 416 couples tied the knot within just over seven hours, setting a new single-day record at the renowned Kerala temple. The ceremonies were held on the first Sunday of the Malayalam month of Chingam, considered an auspicious occasion for weddings at Guruvayur.
The weddings began at around 4.10 am and continued until 12.45 pm, apart from brief interruptions when the temple was closed for routine rituals, including Ushapooja and Pantheeradi Pooja. The latest figure surpassed the temple’s previous record of 334 marriages, recorded on September 8, 2024.
A total of 442 wedding registrations, including spot bookings, had been scheduled for the day. However, 416 ceremonies were ultimately solemnised, with some couples reportedly not turning up and possible duplicate entries among the registrations.
The record-breaking ceremonies formally began after Guruvayur Devaswom Board Chairman A. V. Gopinath lit the traditional ceremonial lamp at the first wedding mandapam near the eastern entrance. The first couple to get married were Arnav Mohan Kumar from Thalassery in Kannur and Vidya Anand Raj from Pazhayangadi. Weddings subsequently commenced simultaneously at the other mandapams.
Six mandapams were used to accommodate the unusually high number of wedding ceremonies. The scale of the arrangements allowed more than 60 weddings to be conducted every hour at peak times. Officials said around 137 weddings were completed during the first two hours, while the number crossed 300 before the middle of the morning.
The record rush was anticipated well in advance. Guruvayur Devaswom had made extensive preparations to manage the large number of couples, relatives and devotees expected to arrive at the temple. Wedding parties were issued tokens and restrictions were imposed on the number of people permitted near the mandapams. Up to 24 people, including photographers, were allowed to accompany each bride and groom in the wedding area.
Crowd-control and security arrangements were also strengthened. More than 100 police personnel were deployed around the temple and the temple town to regulate crowds and traffic. Fire and Rescue Services personnel were stationed nearby, while health officials and ambulances were kept ready to respond to emergencies. Guruvayur Municipality also extended support to the arrangements.
Special crowd-management measures included regulating movement through the East Nada and directing wedding parties through designated entry and exit routes. Additional temple staff were deployed at the mandapams to ensure that the ceremonies proceeded without major delays.
The first Sunday of Chingam traditionally attracts a large number of couples seeking to solemnise their marriages at Guruvayur, where weddings are conducted in the presence of Lord Guruvayurappan. This year’s extraordinary turnout, however, pushed the number of ceremonies well beyond the temple’s previous single-day record.
The successful completion of 416 marriages in a little over seven hours marks a significant logistical achievement for the Guruvayur Devaswom and the various agencies involved in crowd management, security, traffic regulation, health services and temple administration.
