Kalaburagi: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday said the State Government will conduct a comprehensive assessment of rainfall deficiency across Karnataka before taking a decision on declaring drought in affected regions.

Speaking to reporters at the Aiwan-e-Shahi Guest House during his visit to review the rain-deficit situation in the Kalyana Karnataka region, the Chief Minister said the government would act strictly in accordance with the legal framework governing drought declarations.

“There is a legal framework for declaring areas as drought-hit. We will assess the situation across all parts of the State and take an appropriate decision based on the findings,” Shivakumar said.

He added that his visit to Kalyana Karnataka was aimed at obtaining a first-hand assessment of the prevailing conditions and interacting with farmers to understand the impact of inadequate rainfall.

The State Government is expected to complete its assessment before deciding whether to officially declare drought in the affected districts.
