Islamabad: A court in Pakistan has sentenced a man to death for the murder of teenage social media influencer Sana Yousaf, a case that triggered widespread outrage and debate across the country over women’s safety and online harassment.

The convicted man, identified as Umar Hayat, was found guilty of killing the 17-year-old TikTok star after she repeatedly rejected his advances. According to investigators, Hayat forcibly entered Yousaf’s home in Islamabad in June last year and shot her dead following an argument.

Hayat, now 23, reportedly confessed to the crime during investigations, admitting that he had developed a one-sided obsession with the influencer after interacting with her online. Pakistani media reports stated that he had travelled to Islamabad shortly before the incident in an attempt to meet Yousaf on her birthday.

Despite her refusal to meet him, Hayat allegedly managed to reach her residence, where the confrontation eventually turned fatal.

The Islamabad court not only handed down the death sentence but also ordered the accused to pay compensation of 2.5 million Pakistani rupees to the victim’s family.

Speaking after the verdict, Sana Yousaf’s father, Syed Yousaf Hassan, reportedly said the judgment should serve as “a lesson for all such criminals in society.”

Before her tragic death, Sana Yousaf had gained massive popularity on social media, with more than one million followers on TikTok and over half a million followers on Instagram. She was widely admired for her entertaining and light-hearted videos featuring fashion trends, lip-sync performances, and moments with friends.

The case sparked strong reactions throughout Pakistan, with many activists and citizens calling for stronger protection against harassment, stalking, and violence targeting women and social media personalities.

DPCI International Desk reports that the verdict has been widely welcomed by many across Pakistan, while the tragic death of Sana Yousaf continues to raise serious concerns regarding online obsession, stalking, and the safety of women influencers in the digital era.
