New Delhi: The national capital witnessed a grand display of patriotism and national pride as nearly 5,000 special guests from different sections of society gathered at the historic Red Fort to participate in the 80th Independence Day celebrations. The event brought together school students, NCC cadets, volunteers, women entrepreneurs, welfare-scheme beneficiaries and representatives of various community initiatives.
A major highlight of this year’s celebrations was the commemoration of the 150-year legacy of ‘Vande Mataram’, which holds a special place in India’s freedom movement and cultural history. The national song was officially played from the ramparts of the Red Fort, adding a historic dimension to the Independence Day ceremony.
Among the special invitees were volunteers associated with International Yoga Day, women entrepreneurs supported under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, MY Bharat volunteers, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U) and street vendors covered under the PM SVANidhi scheme. Their presence reflected the participation of people from diverse social and economic backgrounds in the country’s national celebrations.
The atmosphere at the Red Fort turned deeply patriotic as an Army band performed ‘Vande Mataram’, with the gathering joining in the rendition of the national song. The ceremony was followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisting the National Flag at the historic monument.
The Tricolour was accorded a ‘Rashtriya Salute’, marking one of the most solemn moments of the ceremony. The celebrations also featured an aerial salute by two Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force. One helicopter carried the National Flag, while the other displayed a flag representing ‘Vande Mataram’. Flower petals were showered during the aerial flypast, creating a spectacular visual tribute to the nation.
The Red Fort itself was specially decorated for the occasion. Floral arrangements featuring the colours of the National Flag were prominently displayed on the historic ramparts. The decorations also incorporated the words ‘Vande Mataram’ in Hindi, highlighting the theme of the celebrations and the enduring significance of the national song.
The participation of thousands of special guests gave the Independence Day ceremony an inclusive character, bringing together citizens who contribute to society through public service, entrepreneurship, volunteering, welfare programmes and community development. For many of those invited, witnessing the national ceremony from the Red Fort was an emotional and memorable experience.
The celebrations combined the solemnity of the national flag ceremony with cultural and patriotic expressions, while also highlighting the contributions of citizens benefiting from or participating in various government initiatives.
