The Supreme Court is examining whether the Delhi Police kept the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed as violence unfolded during the NEET-UG protests in the national capital on July 20.

The issue arose during ongoing proceedings, with the Court seeking greater clarity on the nature of communication and consultations between the Delhi Police and the MHA during the incident. So far, limited information has been placed before the Court regarding the coordination between the two authorities.

The proceedings have referred to the Supreme Court’s 2012 judgment in the Ramlila Maidan Incident vs. Home Secretary, which cited an affidavit from the then Delhi Police Commissioner stating that, as a matter of established practice, the Delhi Police keeps the Ministry of Home Affairs informed about matters affecting law and order in the national capital.

The Court has, over the years, consistently emphasized the importance of police accountability, transparency, and safeguarding law enforcement from undue political influence. The ongoing hearing is expected to further examine whether established protocols were followed during the handling of the NEET protest-related violence.
