Recent claims by a Bengaluru-based startup regarding the replacement of rare-earth magnets with so-called “virtual magnets” have renewed discussions on the importance of permanent magnets in electric vehicle (EV) motors and the technical challenges associated with alternative motor designs.
According to reports, the startup has developed a technology that replaces permanent rare-earth magnets with copper coils, using software to generate magnetic fields inside the motor. The company claims this approach can reduce dependence on rare-earth materials.
However, industry experts note that significant research has already been undertaken worldwide to develop motors that eliminate the need for permanent magnets. Alternative designs, including motors that use electromagnets or iron rotors, have been explored, but several technical limitations have prevented their widespread adoption in electric vehicles.
Key challenges include lower energy efficiency, reduced starting torque, and limitations in achieving high operating speeds. These factors are critical for EV performance, where energy efficiency directly affects driving range and battery utilisation.
