The Supreme Court of India has set aside the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is accused of conspiring to murder her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
A Bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale directed Sonam Raghuvanshi to surrender before the authorities within three weeks, observing that her continued liberty at this stage could hinder the ongoing trial.
The order was passed while hearing an appeal filed by the Government of Meghalaya challenging the June 29 decision of the Meghalaya High Court, which had upheld the Shillong trial court’s order granting bail to the accused.
The High Court had earlier granted bail on the ground that the investigating agency had allegedly failed to effectively communicate the reasons for Sonam Raghuvanshi’s arrest in accordance with legal requirements.
Allowing the State’s appeal, the Supreme Court cancelled the bail and directed the accused to surrender within the stipulated period, enabling the trial proceedings to continue without obstruction.
The case relates to the alleged murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during the couple’s honeymoon in Meghalaya and remains under judicial consideration.
