New Delhi, July 16: The Delhi High Court has directed the Central Government and the Delhi Government to ensure daily medical monitoring of climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia issued the order while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking urgent intervention to safeguard Wangchuk’s health as his condition reportedly continues to deteriorate.

The court directed authorities to ensure that Wangchuk’s health is monitored on a daily basis, both clinically and otherwise, and that any medical treatment required is provided without delay.

The PIL argued that the government could not remain a passive observer while Wangchuk’s health deteriorated. It further contended that failure to intervene could amount to “abetment of suicide” under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Wangchuk began his indefinite hunger strike as part of a protest demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities and repeated paper leaks.

The High Court’s directions are aimed at ensuring the activist receives timely medical care while his protest continues.
