Chennai, July 16: Abnormally high temperatures are expected to persist across interior parts of Tamil Nadu until July 17, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasting improved rainfall during the latter half of the week, which is likely to bring relief from the ongoing heatwave.
According to RMC officials, the prolonged spell of extreme heat has been caused by a weak Southwest Monsoon circulation over the southern peninsular region, coupled with El Niño-related atmospheric conditions, which have limited cloud formation and rainfall across the State.
On Wednesday, several districts in interior Tamil Nadu recorded temperatures above 40°C. Vellore registered the highest maximum temperature in the State at 41.6°C, while Madurai and Tiruttani also experienced temperatures exceeding 40°C.
Meteorologists expect rainfall activity to improve from the second half of the week as weather conditions become more favourable, which is likely to reduce daytime temperatures and ease the prevailing heatwave.
The weather department has advised residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses by staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and following official weather advisories.
