Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police’s Namma 112 emergency response system continues to face a serious challenge due to a growing number of prank and fake emergency calls, placing unnecessary pressure on control room operators and Hoysala patrol teams.
According to police officials, every emergency alert received through the Namma 112 helpline requires an immediate response. When callers provide false information, police personnel are dispatched unnecessarily, leading to a waste of valuable resources and potentially delaying assistance to people facing genuine emergencies.
In a recent incident, the Hoysala Control Room received a call from a man later identified as Umesh, who reported that four people had been assaulted near a gate under the jurisdiction of the Bandepalya Police Station. A police team was immediately dispatched to the location, only to discover that the information was false.
Officials said prank calls have become a recurring problem for the emergency response system. Women operators working at the 112 Command Centre are particularly affected, as many nuisance callers deliberately target them with abusive or misleading calls. The Bengaluru Police have urged citizens to use the Namma 112 helpline responsibly and only for genuine emergencies. They warned that making false emergency calls is a punishable offence and can hinder timely police response to incidents where immediate assistance is truly required.
