New Delhi, July 28, 2026: The Supreme Court on Tuesday indicated that it is considering the formation of a high-powered independent investigation team to examine allegations of police excesses during the July 20 Parliament march led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and subsequent student protests across the country over the NEET paper leak issue.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated that the proposed inquiry would not be limited to the incidents in Delhi but would also cover allegations of police violence reported from other States during protests against examination paper leaks. The Court said the composition of the investigation panel would be announced at a later stage.
The petition before the Court also raised concerns over the reported use of projectile-action guns (PAGs) against unarmed student protesters, prompting the Bench to emphasize the need for a fair and impartial investigation.
In an interim order, the Supreme Court directed the immediate release of all detained protesters below the age of 18. It also restrained police authorities from taking coercive action against student protesters and prohibited the public disclosure of their personal information.
The Courtโs observations come amid nationwide protests demanding accountability for alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and concerns over the handling of demonstrations by law enforcement agencies.
