Prominent Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara flew Saturday (July 18, 2026) into exile in the United States after serving a five-year sentence on the island, as Washington urged Havana to release more than 700 political prisoners.

Otero Alcantara, designated a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, was sentenced to five years in prison in 2022 for insulting national symbols, contempt and disturbing the public order.

International Attention

Otero Alcรกntaraโ€™s imprisonment attracted widespread international attention. Human rights organizations, artists, governments, and cultural figures described him as a symbol of the struggle for freedom of expression in Cuba. In 2021, he was included in Time magazineโ€™s list of the worldโ€™s 100 most influential people.

Cuban Governmentโ€™s Position

The Cuban government rejects the characterization of Otero Alcรกntara as a political prisoner. Officials argue that those imprisoned following the 2021 protests were prosecuted for violating criminal laws rather than for expressing political opinions. Human rights organizations dispute this view, saying the charges were used to suppress peaceful dissent.
